What is World Asthma Day?

World Asthma Day is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) in collaboration with health care groups and asthma educators to raise awareness about asthma and improve asthma care throughout the world

Each year GINA chooses a theme and organizes preparation and distribution of World Asthma Day materials and resources. World Asthma Day activities are organized in each country by health care professionals, educators, and members of the public who want to help reduce the burden of asthma. (more on Gina website)

In Serbia, only Glaxo Smith Klein wich produce Ventolin, Seretide and other respiratory medicaments supported few activities during this week. One of them was in Saturday 8.5.2010. when I (and Marija from my website Astma.rs) organized seminar for 25 people in Hotel Prezident in Novi Sad. We have been honoured to listen my fantastic doctor Dušica Jarić from Novi Sad, and had a chance to hear Dr Mirjana Dukić from Subotica and Dr Snežana Radić from Belgrade. After formal presentation about asthma, patients and the parents of children with asthma had the opportunity to ask questions and to share the knowledge and their experience.

I talked about my experience with asthma, and how I run a marathon with asthma. The conclusion of this seminar was:

  • If you have good control of your asthma, you will live active life just as healthy people
  • Education is most important single thing we can do. Education will help us learn to leave with our asthma, and will build our confidence. Education will make us more social responsible and will talk to children and other patients about our problems. David Backam and other sportsman who are hiding their asthma are our anti-hero :)
